Secretary
Nicole Miller Rigelman
Associate Professor of Mathematics Education, Portland State University, Portland, Oregon
Professional Work Experiences
Nicole received her doctorate from Portland State University and currently teaches mathematics education courses for preservice and inservice teachers. She also teaches courses in PSU’s Elementary Mathematics Instructional Leader Program. Prior to receiving her doctorate, she taught middle school mathematics and later served as a K-12 mathematics curriculum specialist.
Dr. Rigelman was involved in a National Science Foundation funded, math science partnership grant where she served as faculty for the Collegial Leadership course and supported teachers in their implementation of high-level mathematical discourse in their classrooms. She is the principal investigator on the Connect2MATH-Connect2SCIENCE math science partnership grant focused on engaging teachers and students in inquiry-based math and science instruction and assessment practices as well as the integration and collegial examination of those subject areas. She has been engaged in revisioning teacher preparation with her PSU colleagues and in strengthening partnerships, in so doing she has been able to maintain strong classroom connections through field-based assignments in her coursework. Her current research interests lie in mathematics teacher preparation and professional development, influence of curriculum materials on student and teacher learning, and standards implementation and assessment.
Service to AMTE and other professional organizations:
Nicole serves on several state mathematics advisory boards (e.g., Oregon Mathematics Education Council, Oregon Department of Education Content and Assessment Panel, Smarter Balanced Assessment State Network of Educators) and has taken leadership roles in our state affiliate to the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (AMTE), Teacher of Teachers of Mathematics (e.g., conference presentations, conference planning, president).
Nicole was a member of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Assessment Task Force and Professional Development and Services Committee. She is currently serving NCTM on the 2015 Program Committee for the Annual Meeting.
She has served AMTE on the Teaching Resources Task Force and the Professional Development Committee. She was a member of the Elementary Mathematics Specialists (EMS) Standards writing team and has co-led the various EMS initiatives (i.e., co-writing the joint position paper, planning and convening the state conferences that supported states interested in adopting EMS Standards, serving on the standards revision team) with her colleague Dr. Maggie McGatha from University of Louisville.
Vision for and commitment to AMTE:
My passion is finding ways to support classroom teachers and mathematics teacher educators with the implementation of the Common Core State Standards and Mathematical Practices. I have been involved in various task forces and committees with AMTE over the years and would be eager to serve the organization in a greater capacity. As a member of the board, I would look forward to collaborating with my colleagues to benefit mathematics education.
