The Sophie’s Scholars Program provides academically promising students from under-resourced schools access to a Sacred Heart Preparatory and a college education. Students in the Sophie’s Scholars Program attend an academically rigorous and culturally relevant six-week program every summer prior to entering the eighth grade as well as various academic year programs and meetings.
Position Description:
The Sophie’s Scholars Summer School Program is seeking experienced educators to engage and nurture the critical consciousness of middle school youth through local project-based classes in Math. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated interest in multicultural education and educational technology and a deep concern for educational access, diversity and inclusion.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Teach 3 academic core classes in one discipline
- Create lesson plans for 6th, 7th and 8th grade academic core class
- With the support of a Teaching Assistant, help facilitate a caring, transformative and counter-hegemonic learning environment
Qualifications:
- A minimum of 3 years of middle school or high school teaching experience.
- B.A. or B.S. degree and Teaching Credential or Master’s Degree.
- Excellent verbal and written skills, as well as outstanding interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work well with students and colleagues.
- Obvious passion for the academic subject matter being taught.
- Commitment to equity and inclusion.
- Commitment to transformative education.
Dates and Hours:
- This is a full time position for the six-week summer program from June 22th-July 31st. Teachers are expected to be on campus and working during the program hours of 8:30 am to 4:00 pm, including once a week after school meetings and special events. The summer stipend includes three pre-program curriculum workshops, orientation and Back to Summer Night.
Compensation:
- Summer stipend is $7920
