Math Learning Specialist

The Math Learning Specialist coordinates the Math Learning Program in the Counseling Center’s Learning Assistance Service. The primary purpose of this position is to provide support to college students in achieving math success. The Math Learning Specialist reports to the Assistant Director of the University Counseling Center/Learning Assistance Service (LAS).

Program Development and Implementation 
•Develop innovative strategies and programs to enhance math learning.
•Provide academic coaching and training to help college students understand their math learning issues, improve math competency, and build confidence. 
•Teach/Coordinate EDCP 108M: Math Study Skills and Building Confidence andMATH 003 Independent Study course.
•Identify, develop and present math learning initiatives such as content workshops, math placement test preparation workshops, and presentations that support student success and retention in math courses.
•Collaborate with the LAS Guided Study Session (GSS) and Peer Assisted Learning (PAL) coordinators on training and support of GSS leaders and PAL peer mentors working in math courses.

Collaboration/Academic Liaison
•Work in collaboration with Disability Support Services to provide consultation and academic support as it relates to math learning issues. 
•Work with the Department of Mathematics and other academic departments and consult with faculty and academic advisors in math and/or STEM majors regarding students’ math learning issues. 
•Work with the Dean of Undergraduate Studies to make exception to policy recommendations for students regarding the Math Fundamental Studies requirement.
•Support students requesting exception to policy pertaining to math benchmark courses and other major requirements. 
•Consult and collaborate with other departments and student support programs on campus.

Research and Assessment
•Conduct regular assessments and research on the effectiveness of the math learning program and its interventions.
•Collect and analyze data; prepare reports and summaries for grant proposals. 
•Assist with research in best practices for learning program outcomes. 
•Work with LAS staff to analyze course and participant data.

Supervision and Teaching
•Supervise graduate assistants and student peer mentors/tutors
•Academic teaching affiliation is possible.
