     Morehouse College will support a new initiative to expose students to (1) some clinical training in mathematics teaching; (2)  teaching opportunities with their peers; and (3) more advance teaching opportunities for those interested in pursuing teaching careers.  While some aspects of this initiative may be similar to activities in a teacher licensure program, this is not a teacher preparation program. Given the importance communication plays in making mathematics meaningful, this initiative will be centered on providing opportunities to use the communication of mathematical ideas to improve student learning outcomes in general education courses.   We expect to attract students with varying career aspirations interested in modeling a collaborative work environment and increasing their skills in effective communication.

     We are looking for an expert in mathematics education with demonstrated interest in teacher education to teach general education mathematics courses and to take a leadership role in developing and implementing activities for this new initiative—currently called Communicating TEAMs (Communicating by Thinking Effectively in and About Mathematics). More than ever before, vast numbers of careers involve working collaboratively in teams and communicating effectively is critical to moving up the ladder. Employers see effective communication as an essential workplace skill when hiring graduates.   So while this program will be housed in mathematics and focused on mathematics courses, we aim for Communicating TEAMs  to serve a wide array of students.

    A successful candidate for this position will have

• a Ph.D. or Ed.D. in mathematics or mathematics education, or MS in mathematics with significant experience training mathematics teachers;

• demonstrated expertise or experience in mathematics teaching, training mathematics teachers or using communication of mathematics to improve learning outcomes;

• strong knowledge of best practices for effective classroom teaching methods in mathematics; and

• experience with assessment of student learning outcomes at the undergraduate level.
