Job Summary

Two research projects at the University of Michigan School of Education seek a post-doctoral fellow with background in elementary mathematics teacher education to provide expertise and to collaborate with faculty members, staff members, and graduate students. The position would commence in June 2018 and go through June 2019 with potential for renewal.

The position requires that the fellow be consistently on-site in Ann Arbor to facilitate collaboration with faculty, staff, and graduate students in two areas of work:

Area of work #1: The Elementary Mathematics Laboratory – Teacher Learning in a Classroom-Focused Professional Development

This NSF-funded research project, led by Meghan Shaughnessy and Nicole Garcia, designs and studies an approach to professional development, situated in a common “live” case of elementary mathematics instruction. The project focuses on teacher learning through participation in the professional development. The fellow will engage in activities related to study design, data collection, data analysis including using the Mathematical Quality of Instruction (MQI) instrument to analyze classroom lessons, and dissemination. The work may include the delivery of professional development sessions.

Area of work #2: Assessing Teaching Practice (@Practice) Project

The @Practice project, led by Timothy Boerst and Meghan Shaughnessy, conducts research and engages in development focused on simulation as a means of assessing, and supporting learning of, high-leverage teaching practices and mathematical knowledge for teaching. The post-doctoral fellow will work on an NSF-funded grant exploring crucial questions about the relationship between mathematical knowledge for teaching (MKT) and skill with high leverage teaching practices (HLP). More specifically, the project will employ teaching simulations to support teacher candidates in deepening their knowledge and understanding of elementary mathematics. The fellow will engage in activities related to study design, data collection, data analysis, and dissemination. More information about the project can be found at http://sites.soe.umich.edu/at-practice/
