The Marin School, an independent college-preparatory high school in San Rafael, California, seeks a full-time Learning Center Math Specialist to work collaboratively in its Learning Services Department to support a range of learners (Grades 9-12), particularly those with documented learning differences.

The Marin School currently serves approximately 90 students in grades 9-12. We honor each student's unique learning style and act in accordance with a deep belief in the potential of each and every student. Our motto is "Small School. Big Impact." Class size at the school is small by design, typically 7-10 students, to allow teachers to fully understand their students and give teachers the ability to personalize their instruction with experiential learning, innovative lessons and non-traditional and effective learning opportunities.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide direct  academic support in one-on-one and small group settings to students in Math and Science.

  • Keep accurate records and collect daily notes on students progress in collaboration  with the Director of Learning Services

  • In collaboration with the Director of Learning Services, assist teachers on how to differentiate instruction for a variety of learning styles

  • Assist with use of assistive technology

  • Maintain strong, professional relationships with colleagues in an environment where listening, critical thought, respectful debate, and compromise are welcomed and essential.

  • Communicate timely and proactively with the Director of Learning Services about student progress.

  • Collaborate with other members of the faculty, administration, and staff on experiential, interdisciplinary, and community-based opportunities that add to the school community.

  • Participate in faculty and staff meetings as needed.

  • Supervise and/or participate in non-academic activities such as lunch supervision, chaperoning for dances and other activities, overnight trips, and service days.

Qualifications:

  • Has an Associate Degree (Bachelor’s Degree preferred) in an educational field of math or science.

  • Possesses strong math content knowledge, up to Algebra 2, Chemistry and Statistics

  • Possesses at least three years of teaching, tutoring or instructional assistance in math and science

  • Ability to utilize a variety of instructional strategies to support student understanding and engagement

  • Enjoys working with students with diverse learning needs.

  • Has an engaging style and some experience using assistive technology

  • Effectively manages multiple priorities.

  • A desire to work in a diverse and inclusive school environment.

  • A commitment to work collaboratively and innovatively with colleagues.

  • An ability to communicate respectfully, proactively, and honestly both orally and in writing with parents, colleagues, and administrators regarding students. A positive attitude, excellent written and oral skills, strong organizational skills and success within a work setting that requires collaboration, cooperation, flexibility, and collegiality.
