2018 Excellence in Teaching in Mathematics Teacher Education Award Recipient - Signe Kastberg

Biography

Dr. Signe E. Kastberg is a Professor of Mathematics Education in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction in the College of Education at Purdue University.

Dr. Kastberg’s teaching motivates and is informed by her research in the scholarship of teaching and learning. She focuses specifically on relational practice, including exploring and illustrating listening, trust, care, and empathy, and the ways in which these sustain and motivate student-teacher collaborations. At the undergraduate level, she collaborates with prospective elementary teachers to gain understandings of their views of mathematics teaching and children’s mathematics learning. She encourages prospective teachers to explore their life experiences and relationships for insights into how these inform their ways of interacting with mathematics-learners as humans and mathematicians. At the graduate level, she collaborates with future mathematics teacher educators, encouraging them to gain insight into their passions and use their mathematics education scholarship to inform their growth as teachers.
