June 2014: Teacher Prep Review 2014 is the second edition of NCTQ's annual assessment of the nation's 2,400 teacher prep programs. The Review uncovers early evidence that teacher prep programs are beginning to make changes. It arrives at a time of heightened, unprecedented activity across the nation to improve teacher preparation. The Executive Summary provides an overview of findings and offers "top ten" lists for elementary and secondary teacher preparation. Number one at the secondary level: Western Governors University.

Recruiting, preparing, developing and supporting great teachers has a direct impact on the learning and success of America’s students. Research confirms that the most important in-school factor in a student’s success is a strong teacher, and excellent teachers are especially important for our neediest students. However, the vast majority of new teachers – almost two-thirds – report that their teacher preparation program left them unprepared for the realities of the classroom.
