On February 10-12, 2022, AMTE hosted our Twenty-Sixth Annual Conference in Henderson, NV, near Las Vegas. To accommodate AMTE members as we continue to navigate the pandemic, both in-person and virtual attendance options were made available. Between these options, 642 attendees were registered for the conference (468 in-person & 174 virtual). More than 440 presenters provided 248 sessions! The poster session was held right after lunch on Friday; there was plenty of space to view 31 posters and visit with the presenters. There were opportunities to visit and catch up with colleagues and meet new ones during meals, receptions and breaks. This year’s attendees were offered the opportunity to decline a conference gift and instead donate to an educational non-profit. We are pleased to announce that $937 will be donated to Clark County Black Caucus.
The opening session of the conference was titled, “What are our Responsibilities to Mathematics Teacher Education in this Moment?” Presenters included Melissa Adams Corral, California State University, Stanislaus; Toya Frank, George Mason University; Luis Leyva, Vanderbilt University; Priya V. Prasad, University of Texas at San Antonio; and Jared Webb, North Carolina A&T State University. On Friday, Sandra Crespo, Michigan State University, gave this year’s Judith E. Jacobs Lecture titled “What Does It Mean and What Will It Take to Be an Anti-Racist Mathematics Teacher Educator?”. We thank all of these keynote speakers for sharing their time and expertise with those attending this year’s conference.
During the conference, exhibitors provided materials and information of interest to members. Gold Sponsors included CPM Educational Program and Maier Math Foundation. This year’s Silver Sponsor was the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and Bronze Sponsors included Budapest Semesters in Mathematics Education, Get More Math, Information Age Publishing, and Mathematics Olympiads for Elementary and Middle Schools. Other Exhibitors included Baylor University School of Education, Great Minds - Eureka Math, NCSM: Leadership in Mathematics Education, and TODOS: Mathematics for ALL! We thank each of these exhibitors for contributing to the success of the conference.
At a Thursday evening reception, more than 100 graduate students, early career faculty, and AMTE leaders had an opportunity to meet and talk with each other. Thank you to Information Age Publishing and NCTM for supporting the reception. Additionally, AMTE hosted the inaugural reception for BIPOC Scholars where over 25 attendees gathered to connect and network.
At the Business Meeting on Saturday, members were encouraged to make plans to attend the Twenty-Seventh AMTE Conference, which will be held at the Astor Crowne Plaza in New Orleans, LA on February 2-4, 2023. Please look for an announcement about the Call for Proposals on the AMTE website sometime later in March.
Thanks to all who attended this year’s conference and to all who helped deliver the conference. The planning and on-site logistical details were handled by the Conferences Committee led by Colleen Eddy as AVP of Conferences from the University of North Texas with support from Rachel Harlow, Conferences Committee Administrative Assistant. The 2022 Program Committee was led by Julie Amador from the University of Idaho. Many thanks go to the local arrangement co-chairs Jeff Shih and Travis Olson, University of Nevada, Las Vegas and all of their colleagues who helped with on-site registration and support.
See you in New Orleans, Louisiana in February 2023!
