Communication from the AMTE Board of Directors

At their annual fall retreat, the AMTE Board reviewed the progress that has been made toward meeting AMTE’s Long-Term goals:

Long-Term Goal 1: Provide resources and strategies for recruitment, retention, and diversification of the mathematics teacher pipeline.

Long-Term Goal 2: Provide resources and strategies for recruitment, retention, and diversification of the mathematics teacher educator pipeline.

Long-Term Goal 3: Engage mathematics teacher educators in opportunities designed to strengthen the research and research-based practices of mathematics teacher education, with a commitment to supporting understanding of how issues of social and racial justice undergird all of our work.

Long-Term Goal 4: Develop systematic processes for studying progress towards and effectiveness of actionable items embedded in the long-term goals.

Over the last year, AMTE Divisions and Committees have initiated new programs and continued to support existing programs to work toward these four goals, with a focus on advancing our organizational commitment to furthering social justice and equity through our work as mathematics teacher educators. As noted last year, the reflection activity that took place at the board retreat is a key component of our work toward Goal 4; it also ensures that our goals remain at the forefront of our work. Here is just some of the work that took place this year that is aligned with the long-term goals:

  • Focused the 2023 Annual Conference Opening Session on advocating for teachers and the teaching profession (Goal 1)
  • Developed an AMTE Get the Facts Out (GFO) webpage (Goal 1)
  • Offered GFO events to support new and experienced users of the GFO materials, including a session at NCTM (Goal 1)
  • Seven Community Circles are active this year (Goal 2)
  • Developed and launched the Early Career BIPOC Faculty Mentoring Program (Goal 2)
  • Released new AMTE Standards Supplementary Materials that are now online (Goal 2 & 3)
  • Developed a Virtual Conference to support early career MTEs (Goal 2)
  • Allocated funding to support STaR fellows from HBCUs, HSIs, Tribal Colleges (Goal 2)
  • Awarded the first AMTE Dissertation Award (Goal 3)
  • Hosted podcasts to publicize the Dissertation Award Winner and BIPOC Mentors/Mentees (Goals 2 & 3)
  • Published a series of articles in Connections from the Equity Committee (Goal 3)
  • Approved and solicited submissions for Volume 6 of the Professional Book Series: Building Community to Center Equity and Social Justice in Mathematics Teacher Education (Goal 3)
  • Revised the Technology Statement to amplify/promote equity focused practices (Goal 3)
  • Will provide time during the conference schedule for member feedback in regard to AMTE’s mission and long-term goals at the Saturday luncheon (Goal 4)

The AMTE Divisions and Committees will continue to develop new programs and resources that meet the needs of our members, as well as to ensure that successful existing programs are sustainable. We invite members to share their feedback and ideas about the work of the organization at any time. You can do so by contacting President Megan Burton, Executive Director Shari Stockero, or any AMTE Board member. See the AMTE Leadership page for contact information.
