Biography
Dr. Dorothy Y. White is a professor of mathematics education in the Mary Frances Early College of Education at the University of Georgia. Her research, teaching, and service interconnect and support empowering all students for success in mathematics by purposefully promoting collaborative relationships among mathematics teachers and researchers. Dr. White’s research centers on three lines of inquiry: access, equity, and culture in mathematics education; teachers’ professional learning communities; and the professional development of mathematics teachers, educators, and doctoral students. Dr. White has a vibrant research program and is a productive scholar who is active in presenting, publishing, and consulting both nationally and internationally. Dr. White teaches undergraduate teacher preparation courses in early childhood education and middle school mathematics education and graduate courses in critical issues and national trends in STEM education. She also provides professional development in mathematics to PreK-8 classroom teachers at the local, state, and national levels. From 2011-13, Dr. White served as Professor-in-Residence at Clarke Middle School for the Clarke County School District (CCSD)/UGA Professional Development School District (PDSD) partnership, where she spearheaded the design of a school-based pedagogy course for mathematics education majors. Dr. White recently served on the Board of Directors for the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (AMTE) from 2015-2019 and was a member of the writing team for the AMTE Standards for Preparing Teachers of Mathematics (2017). Currently, she serves on the editorial boards of Urban Education and the Journal of Urban Mathematics Education; is co-facilitator of the AERA SIG-RME Initiative to Develop Anti-racist Guidelines for Reviewing and Reviewer Selection, and chair of the Distinguished Scholar Award Committee; and Member of the 2020 TODOS: Math for All, a Biannual Conference Committee and NCTM New Orleans 2022 Regional Conference Program Committee. Locally, she has served the Athens Community by facilitating Mathematics Parent Workshops for the Athens Tutorial Program and has served on Local School Governance Teams and the School District’s Parent Advisory Board. Her recent publications include Access and Equity: Promoting High-Quality Mathematics, Grades 9-12 (2018); Access and Equity: Promoting High-Quality Mathematics, Grades PreK-2 (2017); Educators learning from middle school students’ views of mathematical strengths (2017); and Cases for Mathematics Teacher Educators: Facilitating Conversations about Inequities in Mathematics Classrooms (2016). She earned a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction – Mathematics Education from the University of Maryland-College Park (1997), a M.A. in Mathematics Education from Teachers College – Columbia University (1989), and a B.S. in Mathematics from Morgan State University (1985).
