University of Oregon
Biography
As an educator and researcher, Maddy Ahearn enacts projects that work towards social justice in mathematics education. Maddy is a second year PhD student in the Critical and Socioculture Studies in Education program at the University of Oregon. From her undergraduate work developing problem-based math curriculum at the University of Maryland, through her early-career teaching high school students in Baltimore, to her profession creating policy and programs in Oregon, through to her current studies as a PhD student, she has grown to deeply understand that there is no problem with our students’ ability to “get” math, the problem lies in the system where they are supposed to learn. Her current research interests include Oregon State’s reform efforts in high school mathematics, secondary teachers’ implementation of mathematical modeling tasks and teacher’s decision-making schema for tasks selection.
