2023 Excellence in Scholarship Award Recipient - Daniel Chazan

Biography

Daniel Chazan is the Jean, Jeffrey, and David Mullan Professor of Teacher Education in the Department of Teaching and Learning, Policy and Leadership at the University of Maryland, Director of the Center for Mathematics Education, and co-Director of the Terrapin Teachers Initiative. Chazan studies the teaching of mathematics in compulsory high school settings as a practice, embedded inside societal institutions, within a society, that is carried out by individuals with their own identities and knowledge. To further this study, together with Patricio Herbst of the University of Michigan, he has been developing Practical Rationality as a theory of mathematics teaching.
