Biography
Dr. Nicole R. Rigelman is the Stewart Endowed Professor of Mathematics Education in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction in the College of Education at Portland State University (PSU). She also serves as Education Program Officer for the Math Learning Center, a non-profit curriculum development company.
Dr. Rigelman has taught mathematics methods and content courses for preservice teachers. She is the coordinator of PSU's Mathematics Instructional Leader program where she supports content, pedagogy, and leadership development for practicing teachers and teacher leaders. She is passionate about developing partnerships with schools and working alongside teachers and leaders to support shifts in instruction that deepen mathematical thinking and discourse. A critical element in all of her work is supporting learners in experiencing the wonder, joy, and beauty of mathematics as a vehicle for positively influencing their identity and agency. Dr. Rigelman was an author on AMTE’s Standards for Preparing Teachers of Mathematics, NCTM’sCatalyzing Change in Early Childhood and Elementary Mathematics, and co-chair of AMTE’s various mathematics specialist initiatives (i.e., standards, position statement, state certification, researcher convening).
