Courtney Baker | Associate Professor of Mathematics Education Leadership |  George Mason University

Courtney Baker is an associate professor of mathematics education leadership at George Mason University (GMU). Her passion for mathematics developed during her early years as an elementary educator, where she collaborated with a school-based mathematics coach and became deeply curious about creating learning environments that provide all students with access to meaningful and empowering mathematics experiences. With the encouragement of her colleagues, Courtney pursued a Master’s Degree in Mathematics Education Leadership, followed by a Ph.D. in Mathematics Education. This academic journey deepened her understanding of the evolving challenges in supporting mathematics instruction, particularly the limited opportunities for professional learning and growth for mathematics specialists.

Courtney has taught a diverse range of courses across multiple programs and student audiences. She mentors future educators and leaders to critically examine the systems they encounter, actively shaping the change they wish to see in the world. She has the honor of serving as the Academic Program Coordinator for GMU's Mathematics Education Leadership programs and the Director of the GMU Mathematics Education Center, creating innovative, inclusive learning opportunities that drive lasting change locally and beyond.

Courtney's research focuses on the education and professional development of mathematics specialists, teacher leaders, and in-service teachers. Integrating theory and practice, she uses her courses as spaces for self-study research, where she addresses critical issues in the field while empowering students to become socially conscious leaders capable of driving meaningful change. Her work has been published in outlets such as the Journal of Mathematics Teacher Education, Professional Development in Education,Studying Teacher Education, and International Journal of STEM Education. In addition, she is the co-author of the influential book Proactive Mathematics Coaching: Bridging Content, Context and Practice which challenges K-12 leaders at all levels to ensure that all students engage with rigorous, relevant, and equitable mathematics. Courtney is most proud of the innovative school-university partnerships and mentoring networks she has fostered, which promote collaboration, trust, and reciprocal learning in research, teaching, and service.
