2024 Elementary Math Specialist Scholarship
Nikki Lyons
Biography
Nikki Lyons is an educator for the Special School District in St. Louis, MO. She has been teaching for over 20 years both St. Louis, MO and Rockford, IL. She received her Masters in Education from National-Louis University and has her Special Education endorsement through University of Phoenix. Nikki loves to learn and brings that love to her classroom regularly. Teaching math has always been her favorite, probably because she struggled learning math as a student herself. It wasn’t until she enrolled in the “How to Learn Math for Teachers” taught by Jo Boaler through Stanford Math that her passion for teaching math really grew. She loves finding new and engaging ways to teach math so her students love learning, gain confidence in their mathematical practice, and become mathematicians.
In 2021, Ms. Lyons became the Early Intervention Math Specialist in Lindbergh School District, focusing on students who were struggling in math. This experience gave her the opportunity to use math games, manipulatives, fluency activities, and hands-on opportunities to help students in grades kindergarten through 5th grade grow in their learning. She continues these practices in her resource classroom.
When Nikki isn’t teaching she is busy reading or napping with her retired Greyhound Aikman. Nikki is excited to continue building her mathematical knowledge by pursuing her Mathematical Certification Specialist Certificate through University of Missouri-St. Louis.
