Election 2022: Angela Barlow

Participation in AMTE and/or AMTE Affiliates(s)

As a 20+ year member, I have continuously volunteered to support AMTE, including the Affiliate Connections Committee (2009 – 2011, Chair: 2010 – 2011), the Mentoring Committee (2012 – 2015, Chair: 2013 – 2015), the Mathematics Teacher Educator (MTE) panel (2016 – 2018), and the Marketing Ad-Hoc Committee (2021). I have presented at the conference each year since 2005 (exceptions: 2007 and 2021) and typically volunteer to review proposals.

To support members’ publishing success, I was a reviewer in MTE’s 2016 special session and 2022 manuscript review group. I also presented a webinar on writing for MTLT as part of AMTE’s professional development series (2021).

While in Mississippi, I worked with colleagues to establish an affiliate (MAMTE) and served in several of its offices. As president, I led our initial efforts to develop an elementary mathematics specialist certification and our collaboration with the state agency to modify certification requirements for secondary mathematics teachers.

Participation in Related Organizations

I have been an active member of two additional professional organizations: the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) and the National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics (NCSM). For NCTM, I served as the program co-chair of the 2015 NCTM Regional Conference in Nashville, Tennessee. Currently, I am serving as the inaugural editor-in-chief of NCTM’s newest publication, Mathematics Teacher: Learning & Teaching PK-12 (MTLT). For NCSM, I served as a state team leader (2010 – 2011), an appointed member of the Board of Directors (2011 – 2018), a member of the Communications Committee (2011 – 2018), and associate editor (2011 – 2013) and editor (2013 – 2018) for NCSM Journal of Mathematics Education Leadership (NCSM JMEL). For both organizations, I have a strong record of reviewing for and publishing in their journals as well as presenting at their conferences.

Qualifications for the Position

I am a dedicated member of AMTE, who is committed to the success of the organization. I have a long history of volunteering to support AMTE and am passionate about this opportunity to serve AMTE in a leadership role.

I am a mathematics teacher educator and have held faculty appointments in a variety of institutions. This has afforded me the opportunity to teach content and methods courses, both graduate and undergraduate. I have also supported the development of doctoral students as mathematics teacher educators.

I am an inclusive leader that values the perspectives of diverse individuals. My skillset includes simultaneously attending to the big picture and the important details. Communication and dependability are my strengths. These skills have supported my success in collaborative development of a vision within several different contexts.

These qualifications, skills, and attributes will support my success as an AMTE Board Member-at-Large.

Three Goals AMTE should make a Priority

I acknowledge AMTE’s Long-Term Goals (LTGs). Rather than provide three additional goals, I will offer a single goal that connects to these LTGs: increased collaboration with other professional organizations. Strategic collaboration with other organizations opens opportunities to build synergy regarding common goals. For example, LTG1 addresses recruitment, retention, and diversification of the mathematics teacher pipeline, and current efforts include disseminating information to the AMTE membership. Imagine slightly modifying the information for consumption by teachers and then collaborating with NCTM to leverage their membership in attaining this goal. Alternatively, LTG2 involves the recruitment, retention, and diversification of MTEs. Current actions are aimed at new MTEs, but how might a collaboration with NCSM serve to recruit individuals to become MTEs? And how might other organizations benefit from collaborating with AMTE? Collaboration will support AMTE in meeting its LTGs, potentially transforming the field through the combining of resources and expertise.
