Election 2022: Katie Rupe

Participation in AMTE and/or AMTE Affiliates(s)

I am a 2021 STaR Fellow, which has been a transformational support for me as a
newer math educator. I also review conference proposals for the annual conference.

Participation in Related Organizations

I am a member of the Fund Development Committee for TODOS (two-year term), as well as Chair of the Resources Committee and member of the Program Committee for TODOS’ 2023 Annual Conference.

I am a new board member and Region 5 Director for the Washington State Mathematics Council.

I have served as a reviewer for publications and conferences related to math and education as a reviewer for MTLT, and conference proposal reviewer for AERA, PME-NA, and ASTE.

Qualifications for the Position

I have served as a secretary in other capacities, such as the Instructional Leadership Team (2012-2016) at the K-8 school where I worked and my Condo Association Board (2010-2018). I am a creative problem solver and ask thought provoking questions. As a member of the board, I would bring my unique perspectives, positivity, and excitement for math education. I appreciate structure, especially in organizing groups of people, and see note-taking, distributing information, and seeking feedback as an essential part of any goal-focused group.

Three Goals AMTE should make a Priority

  1. Strengthen current opportunities and provide new opportunities for new MTEs to collaborate, gain support from experienced AMTE members, and participate in the organization. This could include expanding and developing new opportunities in addition to STaR and Community Circles.
  2. Elevate voices of MTEs and PK-20 students from marginalized groups. This would include creating opportunities for dialogue and collaboration among people that see their work as equity-focused and those that do not. It sometimes seems that equity-fcoused research is separate from other research areas. This exacerbates the disconnect.
  3. Create more opportunities for AMTE to advocate for systemic change (e.g. providing guidance and research that can be useful to universities, creating spaces for school districts to connect with MTE researchers, considering ways we can impact educational policy). The Standards and position statements are important to advocacy. We should think critically about ways we can take action related to these ideas.
