The Columbus Regional Mathematics Collaborative (CRMC) was initiated in the fall of 1989 by the Chattahoochee Council of Teachers of Mathematics with a small grant from the Ford Foundation-funded Urban Mathematics Collaboratives. The CRMC operates as one of the Centers of Excellence at Columbus State University. Housed in the Department of Education and Health Professions, the CRMC serves pre-service and in-service teachers in the Columbus area. In addition to some support from Columbus State University, the CRMC receives funding from area school systems and through grants. This is a full-time position and reports to the Dean of the College of Education and Health Professions.

The Director is responsible for the organization, operation, and management of the Columbus Regional Mathematics Collaborative (CRMC). This position assists in the creation of a vision for CRMC; supervises professional and administrative staff; organizes programs and activities; and oversees and facilitates the operations of the center. The Director is also responsible for the financial management of the center, to include securing funding from grants, local school systems, the University, and other funding sources and monitoring expenditures of these funds; collaborates with the directors and staff of other CSU Centers, faculty and staff in the College of Education and Health Professions , the College of Letters and Science, and with others within the University to provide appropriate mathematics and mathematics education related activities on campus and in the community; serving on appropriate committees related to mathematics education; providing professional development to CRMC staff, and to pre-service and in-service teachers; evaluating CRMC programs and activities; foster an environment of professionalism and collaboration; work in continuous improvement of educator preparation and educational research; demonstrate exceptional ability to function as part of a team with university faculty and the community of practice; and engage in practices that support the University’s focus on student engagement and active learning.

The mission of the Columbus Regional Mathematics Collaborative is to enhance the mathematics education of K-16 students through the development of teacher leaders, beginning with initial preparation and continuing through their professional teaching careers. The resource staff of the CRMC and teacher leaders, mentor other teachers and administrators, encourage parent and public involvement in mathematics education, and develop means to support all teachers of mathematics in their professional growth. The goal of the CRMC is for all students to learn that mathematics enables them to continue their education, to make informed decisions as citizens, and to participate fully in their chosen vocations.

The CRMC provides services to schools and school systems within a 65-mile radius of Columbus. Services include, but are not limited to, the following:
• The opportunity to borrow teacher resources such as books, videos, software, calculators, and manipulatives for grades K-12,
• Workshops, seminars and conferences on such topics as helping teachers implement national and state standards,
• On-site professional development through faculty meetings and classroom assistance from resource teachers to include lesson planning, implementation and demonstration lessons,
• Assistance in planning family math nights,
• Financial assistance from the Helen P. Purks Fund to attend professional development conferences or workshops.
