The Columbia University Tutoring and Learning Center (TLC) was created to improve the academic performance and overall college readiness of high school students in low-income neighborhoods by providing individualized, high quality tutoring in mathematics and English Language Arts that complements and supports education in the classroom. The TLC partners with high schools in the Harlem and Morningside Heights communities and provides all tutored high school students with laptops and free wifi service. Tutors are drawn from Columbia University and Barnard College undergraduates and graduate students. Tutoring provided by the TLC is enhanced by a variety of educational technology interventions and incorporates insights from recent research in educational psychology, including self-affirmation, growth mindsets, and the mitigation of stereotype threat.
