The Columbia University Tutoring and Learning Center (TLC) was created to improve the academic performance and overall college readiness of high school students in low-income neighborhoods by providing individualized, high quality tutoring in mathematics and English Language Arts that complements and supports education in the classroom. The TLC partners with high schools in the Harlem and Morningside Heights communities and provides all tutored high school students with laptops and free wifi service. Tutors are drawn from Columbia University and Barnard College undergraduates and graduate students. Tutoring provided by the TLC is enhanced by a variety of educational technology interventions and incorporates insights from recent research in educational psychology, including self-affirmation, growth mindsets, and the mitigation of stereotype threat. 

Reporting to the Director of Tutoring, Tutor Supervisors play a key role in implementing and evaluating the overall tutoring program. In addition to fulfilling the regular responsibilities of a tutor supervisor, the Math Curriculum Specialist/Tutor Supervisor works closely with other TLC staff to design the best approaches for teaching mathematics in tutoring sessions, making sure that our tutoring curriculum is synchronized with the classroom curriculum, the Common Core, and the Regents exams. Ideal candidates will have excellent math skills and a strong background in both the theory and practice of tutoring and tutor training, including experience supervising college student tutors. Candidates should be able to adapt to a start-up environment with evolving responsibilities, workloads, and work schedules. 

Responsibilities: 

-Work with the TLC tutoring staff to develop and implement the TLC's overall approach to tutoring. 

-With Director, design the TLC's approach to teaching mathematics in tutoring sessions, ensuring that the tutoring curriculum is synchronized with the classroom curriculum, the Common Core, and the Regents exams. 

-Participate in the recruitment, training and supervision of 100+ college student tutors. 

-Meet regularly with tutors to review logistics, discuss challenges and successes, and to provide ongoing professional development. 

-Meet regularly with the Director of Tutoring to plan and review tutoring and address issues. 

-Regularly attend tutoring sessions in schools and at TLC's virtual tutoring center to provide support and oversight. 

-Participate in staff working groups that are responsible for large events and processes, e.g., the Recruitment working group, the Technology working group. 

-Implement policies governing the behavior of tutors in their work with minors. 

-Collaborate with TLC research staff to deploy assessment tools. 

-Communicate regularly with school-site personnel and parents regarding student attendance and performance 

-Other duties as assigned.
