The Department of Mathematics and Statistics has 43 permanent faculty and offers Bachelors' degrees in Mathematics, Secondary Education in Mathematics, and Data Science; Masters' degrees in Mathematics, Mathematics Education, and Statistics; and a graduate certificate in Applied Statistics. About the Position

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Northern Arizona University (NAU) seeks a dynamic and innovative scholar for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Secondary Mathematics Education beginning August 19, 2024. The successful applicant will further NAU's commitment to strategically increase its capacity to provide local and national leadership in secondary mathematics education through teacher preparation, innovative undergraduate and graduate programs, professional development, and scholarship.

Responsibilities Include:

• Teaching undergraduate mathematics and mathematics education courses and graduate mathematics education courses in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.
• Teaching courses in the NAUTeach Program (the undergraduate joint secondary [grades 7-12] mathematics and science education program).
• Teaching in-person on the Flagstaff Mountain campus, but may include hybrid, or asynchronous fully-online courses.
• Scholarly activities in mathematics education.
• Supervision of undergraduate students in practicum courses.
• Ability to contribute to program development and expansion.
• Graduate student advising.
• Faculty service.

This position is an on-site position which requires the incumbent to complete their work primarily at an NAU site, campus, or facility with or without accommodation. Opportunities for remote work are rare.

Minimum Qualifications

• Earned doctoral degree in mathematics education or in a closely related field expected by August 19, 2024.

Preferred Qualifications

• Substantial evidence of high-quality teaching.
• Demonstrated interest/ability to contribute to the department's mathematics education program at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
• Demonstrated interest/ability to teach in a variety of modalities, such as in-person, hybrid, and online.
• Three or more years of experience in teaching mathematics at the middle or secondary level, preferably in the United States.
• Experience in teaching and developing pedagogical courses for combined mathematics and science preservice teachers.
• Demonstrated experience with and/or potential for future success in mentoring all NAU students through teaching and/or research, and scholarship.
• Demonstrated commitment to working with pre-service and in-service teachers.
• Demonstrated potential for independent research leading to peer reviewed publications and the securing of external research funding.
• Strong mathematics content preparation as exemplified by completed graduate content courses in mathematics.

Compensation & Benefits

Anticipated salary range is $65,000 to $70,000. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.

This is a Faculty (FAC) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) or the Optional Retirement Program (ORP); sick leave accruals and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified family members. Faculty are hired on a contract basis, renewable according to terms of the http://nau.edu/Provost/Resources-Policies/. Employees offered a position will be eligible for state health plans (including NAU's BCBS Plan). Employees will have 31 days from date of hire to enroll in benefits, and their benefits will then be effective the first day of the pay period following their completed enrollment. If a new employee chooses the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) retirement option, participation in the ASRS Plan (and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it) will begin on the first of the pay period following 183 days of employment. New employees who choose to participate in the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP; an alternative to the ASRS plan) will begin to participate on the first day of the pay period following election. The long-term disability plan that accompanies the ORP will begin on the first day of the pay period following election. FLSA Status

This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and therefore will not earn overtime or compensatory time for additional time worked.
