Biography
Sean Freeland is a doctoral candidate at West Virginia University in the Educational Theory and Practice Ph.D. program with a focus on Mathematics Education. His dissertation work is focused on the mathematics identity development and socialization of Black students in rural Appalachia. He is interested in the effect of sociocultural, historical, and political contexts on mathematics teaching and learning. His research interests also include practice-based teacher education including approximations of teaching and coached rehearsals. He has worked on this research with his advisor, Dr. Matthew Campbell, and Dr. Erin Baldinger. Prior to his doctoral work, Sean was a high school mathematics teacher for six years in West Virginia.
