NYSAMTE (New York)

Since the last newsletter, NYSAMTE held its first professional development opportunity for preservice mathematics teachers. On September 28, Andrea Faoro, Associate in Instructional Services – Mathematics at the New York State Education Department presented an update on state initiatives and resources that the Office of Standards and Instruction and the Office of State Assessments created for the field. On November 2, AMTE President Enrique Galindo met virtually with NYSAMTE to share HAMTE’s journey as an AMTE affiliate and offer advice on growing an affiliate organization. Also in November, the executive board of the Association of Mathematics Teachers of New York State (AMTNYS) approved NYSAMTE’s application to be a partner organization. NYSAMTE looks forward to future collaboration with AMTNYS. MI-AMTE (Michigan)

After a few years of virtual conferences, it was such a treat to be able to hold the 2023 MI-AMTE conference in person! This year’s focus was on inclusive teaching strategies, and the conference was hosted by colleagues at Grand Valley State University.

Keynotes and highlighted sessions were offered remotely for virtual participants. There were 44 attendees (11 remote), of which 20 presented (2 remote). These participants came from 20 institutions (7 remote), including attendees from Illinois and Ohio! A highlight of the conference was a keynote from Dr. Brette Garner from the University of Denver entitled “Supporting mathematics teacher learning through co-inquiry.”

On the same day, Grand Valley State also hosted the Math in Action conference, which provides lively and informative discussions of current issues in mathematics education for practicing PreK – 12 teachers, prospective teachers, curriculum directors, and college and university faculty and supports attendees to share ideas, concerns, and resources. Participant feedback indicated that one of the aspects of the conference that was most appreciated was the synergy created by hosting these conferences together, supporting collaboration between mathematics teacher educators, teachers, prospective teachers, and teacher leaders.

Many thanks to Dr. Jon Hasenbank (Grand Valley State) and Dr. Paul Yu (Grand Valley State) for their leadership in hosting the Conversations among Colleagues conference and Math in Action conference, respectively.

The current MI-AMTE board members are Kristen Bieda (MI-AMTE President), Stephanie Casey (MI-AMTE Past-President), Nicole Garcia (Member-At-Large), Marisa Henderson (Graduate Student Representative), Susan Hillman (Secretary), Shari McCarty (Member-At-Large), and Dawn Woods (Treasurer).

In 2023, MI-AMTE launched a new mini-grant program to offer members the opportunity to apply for $1,000 toward research and/or professional development related to mathematics teacher education. In June 2023, three winners were announced: Michael Brown (Michigan State University), Sheila Orr (Michigan State University), and Joy Oslund, Lisa Hawley, and John Golden (Grand Valley State University). Each of the winners will be offering professional development available to MI-AMTE members based on the work that will be supported by the mini-grant award. Congratulations to these grantees!

MI-AMTE has many exciting projects in the works for 2023-2024. They include: (1) creating a members-only feature on the organization’s website to archive keynote talks from Conversations among Colleagues and other professional development offerings; (2) streamlining the membership registration and renewal process; and (3) re-launching a regular MI-AMTE newsletter. The 2023-2024 MI-AMTE goals are:

  • Develop and expand both synchronous and asynchronous membership engagement opportunities.
  • Increase active membership
  • Support professional and career development needs of MI-AMTE members
  • Develop and enhance partnerships across teacher education institutions in Michigan
