In 2020, the AMTE Board identified long-term priorities for the organization for the first time in AMTE’s history. The AMTE Long-term Goals document was shared with members at the 2021 Annual Conference. Over the last year, AMTE Divisions and Committees have taken on several new initiatives and continued providing existing programs and resources to work towards the four goals that were articulated in that document, as well as to advance the organizational commitment to furthering social justice and equity through our work as mathematics teacher educators.
Long-Term Goal 1: Provide resources and strategies for recruitment, retention, and diversification of the mathematics teacher pipeline.
Long-Term Goal 2: Provide resources and strategies for recruitment, retention, and diversification of the mathematics teacher educator pipeline.
Long-Term Goal 3: Engage mathematics teacher educators in opportunities designed to strengthen the research and research-based practices of mathematics teacher education, with a commitment to supporting understanding of how issues of social and racial justice undergird all of our work.
Long-Term Goal 4: Develop systematic processes for studying progress towards and effectiveness of actionable items embedded in the long-term goals.
At the October 2021 Board Retreat, members of the board took time to inventory the organization’s progress toward each of these goals. This activity itself was a key step toward Goal 4, as it ensured that these goals remain at the forefront of our work and that we are systematically examining the outcomes of our collective efforts and where additional focus is needed. Here is just some of the work that is going on within the organization that is aligned with the long-term goals:
- The Get the Facts Out Task Force has been holding webinars on teacher recruitment and is planning a pre-conference (with MTEP) at the 2022 conference (Goal 1)
- A marketing plan has been developed to reach MTEs who are not currently being served by AMTE (Goal 2)
- A plan for member mentoring is being developed to be rolled out in 2022 (Goal 2)
- Community Circles were launched at the 2021 conference and continued to be held online this fall (Goal 2)
- The board has discussed ways to be intentional about developing future leadership (Goal 2)
- Podcasts and social media have been used to expand the organization’s outreach (Goal 2, 3)
- A Community Conversation was held to discuss CRT; future conversations will be planned (Goal 2, 3)
- New SPTM resources are being added to the website (Goal 3)
- Volume 5 in AMTE’s Professional Books Series is in process (Goal 3)
- Equity-related resources have been to the AMTE website (Goal 3)
- Six-month reviews will be conducted by committees, divisions, and the board in regard to the long term goals (Goal 4)
Over the next year, AMTE Divisions plan to work to make both new and existing AMTE programs more sustainable, and well as continue to explore where we might further enhance the services provided to our members. We invite members to share their feedback and ideas about the work of the organization at any time. You can do so by contacting President Megan Burton, Executive Director Shari Stockero, or any AMTE Board member. See the AMTE Leadership page for contact information.
