Candidate for Board Member-at-Large

John Lannin
University of Missouri College of Education, Department of Learning, Teaching, & Curriculum

A former middle and high school mathematics teacher, I am currently an Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Learning, Teaching, & Curriculum at the University of Missouri. My research interests include K-12 children’s understanding and use of generalization and justification, primarily focusing on number development and algebraic reasoning. In addition, my research in teacher education has focused on the specialized knowledge that beginning and master teachers develop. I have been a member of AMTE since 2001 and have served the AMTE community as member of several committees. Most recently, I served as a member of the AMTE-NCTM Joint Publication Task Force that helped launch the Mathematics Teacher Educator, the new joint AMTE-NCTM journal for mathematics teacher educators.

AMTE serves as a valuable resource for researchers and practitioners in the mathematics teacher education community at a time when mathematics teacher education faces increased public scrutiny by outside interests. Our organization must be proactive by providing mathematics teacher educator resources that support the development of a thriving professional learning community. In addition, we play a vital role in communicating with the pubic about the specific knowledge and critical role that we play as mathematics teacher educators. As a member of the AMTE Board, one of my primary goals is to support and extend the opportunities for the continued professional growth and diverse needs of AMTE members.
