Candidate for Treasurer
Suzanne Harper
Associate Professor, College of Arts and Science, Department of Mathematics, Miami University (2002-Present)
After graduating from the University of Virginia, I joined the Department of Mathematics faculty at Miami University in 2002. A common theme that permeates my teaching and research activities is the development of effective uses of technology in the teaching and learning of mathematics. I have served NCTM as co-editor of the “Technology Tips” Department in The Mathematics Teacher (2004-2006); as well as a member on the Program Committee for the 2008 regional NCTM conference in Oklahoma City. I have served as co-PI on a number of professional development grants for middle school and high school mathematics teachers.
AMTE Experiences
AMTE is the organization most pertinent to our careers as mathematics teacher educators and mathematics education researchers. I attend and present at many of the annual conferences, and thoroughly enjoy the time I spend networking and visiting with colleagues at AMTE functions. I have been an AMTE member since 2000 – and have been an active member for the past seven years, serving AMTE in a number of ways. I was a member of the Technology Committee (2006-2008), where we revised and implemented the selection process for the National Technology Leadership Initiative Award. I was also a member of the editorial panel for the AMTE Monograph: Scholarly Practices and Inquiry in the Preparation of Mathematics Teachers, Volume 6 (2008-2009). Most significantly, I have contributed to the AMTE vision as a proposal reviewer for the annual conferences and a member of the Program Committee (2006, 2011-2014). I served as the Assistant Program Chair for the 2012 conference, and I am presently serving as the chair of the Program Committee for the 2013 conference.
Vision for AMTE
The strength and quality of AMTE is a direct result of its passionate members. It is an organization that thrives on the collaboration of mathematics teacher educators as a place to support and disseminate both educational research and innovative professional development models. As the treasurer, I will work to support growth in AMTE’s membership and conserve the current treasury for the future.
