The Louise S. McGehee School Mathematics Department is committed to creating environments in which our students are motivated to learn and practice math. We provide our students with the tools to become lifelong learners by encouraging risk-taking in the classroom, supporting the development of their critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and stressing the importance of communication and collaboration. As a result, our students develop a positive attitude towards the study of mathematics, believe they can succeed in mathematics courses, and graduate with a strong math foundation to be successful in STEM fields, should they pursue these career paths.
Position Description:
Louise S. McGehee School is seeking a dynamic upper school math teacher with the capacity to teach in the middle school as required. As full faculty members in the community, the teachers will be expected to create and lead students through a variety of math topics. Qualified candidates for the position should be confident in teaching Algebra 1 and 2. The capacity to teach Statistics and/or Computer Science is a distinct advantage for this position, as is the capacity to create opportunities to use mathematics in scientific or otherwise authentic applications. Assisting other faculty in the integration of math topics in their courses is an important part of the position.
Essential Functions:
- Demonstrate capacity to teach across the curriculum, incorporating opportunities for students to apply mathematics to authentic situations, especially in the realm of science.
- Foster an open, inclusive learning environment that supports all students and their families through word, action, curriculum, and teaching strategies.
- Demonstrate competency with student-centered technology, an interest in advancing and supporting its use to enhance student learning, and the desire to employ technology to connect with students.
- Collaborate with other members of the math department to design and implement the curriculum as well as employ recent research and national standards proven to lead to effective mathematical learning.
- Have the ability to support students in their acquisition and development of key process skills related to scientific work.
- Collaborate to develop cross-curricular projects across the grade level.
- Maintain a comprehensive online class syllabus and curriculum guide.
- Set clear expectations for students.
- Fulfill assigned duties to monitor students in various capacities, as designated by school protocols.
- Serve as advisor to a group of students.
- Attend and contribute at grade level, division, and faculty meetings.
- Act as a flexible and collaborative member of the community whose work expands beyond the classroom to enhance the student experience at the school.
- Model a mindset of lifelong learning and the willingness to take risks that serve as growth opportunities.
- Demonstrate excellent communication skills both written and spoken and a highly refined work ethic and positive spirit. Communicate regularly and appropriately with the student, parent, advisor, and division head about student academic and social progress.
- Be motivated to find ways to contribute to the life of the School through activities, events, coaching, clubs, etc.
Requirements:
Qualifications/Experience:
- A bachelor's degree in either Math education or Math
- Prior teaching experience in an upper school or middle school setting.
- Demonstrated love of high school and middle school students.
- Preference will be given to candidates with a demonstrated capacity to teach Statistics and/or Computer Science.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment:
- Regularly works in standard office or classroom conditions and climate.
- Regularly uses close and distance vision, including working at a computer screen for extended periods of time.
- Frequently required to move around the office/classroom; works at a desk for extended periods of time.
- Ability to maintain appropriate boundaries with students, fellow staff and community members.
- Ability to stand for extended periods of time.
- Physical agility to lift up to 25 pounds to shoulder height and 50 pounds to waist height; and to bend, to stoop, to reach, to sit on the floor, to climb stairs, to walk and to reach overhead.
