Notes from the Professional Development Committee

The Professional Development Committee had an eventful 2025-2026 year. In the past year, we organized a virtual institute, webinars, manuscript review groups, and a conference presentation.

  • This was the committee’s fourth year hosting the virtual institute in November 2025, with the theme “Across the Arc: Sustaining Our Learning, Sharing Our Practice.” The 2025 institute featured over 30 speakers as we launched the first ever lightning talk sessions where members were invited to share seven-minute talks focused on mathematics teacher practice, professional development for teachers, and research in mathematics teacher education. We also made the institute accessible to non-members as a paid virtual conference, and had non-members join. The institute boasted 165 registrants and session blocks with no less than 57 attendees at any time.
  • We hosted 2 webinars this year. You can find information on our webinar website.
  • We launched the Manuscript Review Groups this winter and had 3 author mentees participate.
  • We facilitated a session at AMTE and were able to support participants in thinking about their practice and growth as MTEs.

As we move into the 2026-2027 year, we are excited to keep the momentum going. We have two upcoming webinars.

  • On March 26th at 3pm EST, Dr. Zuhal Yilmaz, Dr. Terrie M. Galanti, and Dr. Nirmala Naresh will present "Leveraging the Standards of Mathematical Practice: How Prospective Teachers Learn to Position AI as Problem Solving Partner." Participants will have an opportunity to engage with one of two AI tools and discuss ways to use them with prospective teachers. Given the interest in topics focused on AI, this session will be accessible to non-members for a small fee.
  • On May 20th at 3pm EST, Kimberly Yoak will present "Sharing Stories to Broaden Perceptions of Mathematics and Transform School Mathematics." We look forward to learning how adults describe their lived math experiences and connections to their mathematics schooling. Attendees will be able to think about ways these can be used in methods courses to support teacher candidate pedagogical decision making.

As always, if you are interested in presenting your work in a webinar, please access the submission form at this link.
