Updates from the Professional Development Committee

 The Professional Development Committee is excited to share several upcoming opportunities designed to support learning, collaboration, and professional growth within the mathematics teacher education community. From webinars and the revised Manuscript Review Groups to the AMTE Virtual Fall Institute, we invite you to engage with colleagues across a range of professional learning opportunities throughout the 2026–2027 academic year.

Upcoming Webinars

We are excited to begin the 2026–2027 academic year with two webinar opportunities focused on current issues and practices in mathematics teacher education.

On August 14th at 3pm EDT, Dr. Hyunyi Jung, Dr. Ben Galluzzo, Joleigh Honey, and Dr. Farshid Safi, members of the NCTM/COMAP/SIAM Joint Committee, will present Math Modeling that Matters in Practice: An Interactive Discussion with the NCTM/COMAP/SIAM Joint Committee. This interactive session will engage participants in conversations about the role of mathematical modeling in supporting reasoning, sense making, and community-centered mathematics learning. Participants will explore classroom methods, strategies, and modeling resources, while also considering connections to the Mathematical Education of Teachers (MET III) and Standards for the Education of Teachers (SET II) documents.

On September 2nd at 3pm EDT, Dr. Enrique Ortiz will lead a session focused on culturally relevant pedagogy in mathematics classrooms. Participants will engage in a mathematics task connected to personal experiences, reflect on perceptions of culturally relevant pedagogy, and discuss ways to balance meaningful social contexts with rigorous mathematics content. The session will also share findings from a thematic content analysis study involving pre-service and in-service teachers, along with additional classroom resources and implementation ideas across grade levels.

As always, if you are interested in presenting your work in a webinar, please access the submission form at this link

Manuscript Review Groups

We are excited to launch a revised format for our Manuscript Review Groups (MRGs) during the 2026–2027 academic year. This year, MRGs will run virtually from August 2026 through May 2027 with no requirement to attend the annual conference.

These changes are intended to support more sustained mentor-mentee relationships, provide additional time for meaningful feedback and manuscript development, and increase access for doctoral students and early-career (pre-tenure) scholars who may not be able to attend the conference in person.

If you are an early-career mathematics teacher education scholar or doctoral student interested in receiving support as you prepare and refine a manuscript for submission during the 2026–2027 academic year, please complete the mentee application form.

Timeline

  • Wednesday, July 1: Manuscript abstracts and applications due
  • Wednesday, July 22: Acceptance notifications sent
  • Wednesday, August 19: MRGs formed and email introductions sent to participants
  • By mid-September: MRGs meet virtually to establish goals and plans for the year
  • Throughout the year: MRGs meet at least four times, concluding by mid-May 2027

If you are a mathematics teacher education scholar with a history of publishing and would be willing to support a mentee through the 2026-2027 academic year, please volunteer using the following mentor volunteer form.

Please direct any questions to Travis Weiland at tweilan1@charlotte.edu

Timeline

  • Wednesday, August 5: Mentor volunteer applications due.
  • Wednesday, August 19: MRGs are created and all participants are notified with email introductions.
  • By mid-September: MRGs meet virtually to establish goals and plans for the year
  • Throughout the year: MRGs meet at least four times, concluding by mid-May 2027

AMTE Virtual Fall Institute 2026

Learning in Motion: Sustaining Practice, Strengthening Community
Date & Time: Friday, November 20th, 2026 | 11:30 am - 3:00 pm Eastern Time
Location: Virtual (Zoom)
Cost: FREE for AMTE members

Join us for the AMTE Virtual Fall Institute 2026, a professional learning opportunity designed to support mathematics teacher educators at all stages of their careers. This year’s theme, Learning in Motion: Sustaining Practice, Strengthening Community, invites us to consider how our learning evolves through collaboration, reflection, and shared practice. As PK–12 mathematics teaching continues to evolve to support new mathematical pathways and growing attention to supporting diverse student experiences and ways of learning, the knowledge, practices, and skill sets mathematics teacher educators draw on are expanding as well. As mathematics teacher educators navigate changing professional contexts and new questions about our work, the Institute offers space to collaboratively reflect evolving practice, explore new possibilities for mathematics teacher education, and strengthen the professional communities that sustain our work.

This year’s Institute will feature

  • a keynote focused on the ongoing learning and development of mathematics teacher educators;
  • presentations from recent dissertation awardees highlighting emerging research and perspectives in the field;
  • virtual lightning talks on teacher educator practice, professional learning, and research in mathematics teacher education; and
  • a closing conversation centered on sustaining meaningful professional communities and supporting continued growth in our work.

Lightning Talk proposals open August 15, 2026.
Speaker lineup to be announced by October 19, 2026.

We look forward to learning with you!
