Navigating the Shift: Mathematics Teacher Educators’ Beliefs, Concerns, and Practices around AI Technologies
This 2026 NTLI award submission video reports on research exploring mathematics teacher educators’ (MTEs) perspectives on using AI, particularly their perceived beliefs and concerns, as well as their reported practices of using AI with their preservice teachers. By analyzing their survey responses, MTEs shared that saving time and generating content were the AI’s primary benefits, and they were mostly concerned about the lack of critical thinking and the loss of independent thinking. Their common uses of AI were designing and analyzing lesson plans and tasks, and analyzing AI-generated outputs for mathematical accuracy. We classified MTEs into AI integrators, AI cautious integrators, and AI skeptics according to their adoption of AI in their practice. We unpacked their perspectives and practices using the interconnected model of professional growth framework. This work provides insight into ways to support MTEs’ professional growth and develop critical perspectives towards AI use in teacher education programs.
