AMTEC (Connecticut)
Greetings AMTE community! Since the last Connections, AMTEC held our annual business meeting in March as a virtual event. The virtual situation allowed us to try out a new format and we did “ignite”-type talks that included Michelle Stephan from the NC affiliate, as well as a math teacher and math coach working on data science and computer science in Connecticut. Having these wonderful speakers would not have been possible in our standard format.
We attempted more “new” in the summer with our First Annual Pre-service Teachers Conference. Launching the day with a keynote from Steve Leinwand, a legendary Connecticut math educator, we enjoyed sessions on equitable content and pedagogy, as well as panels on student teaching and edTPA. During the summer, many members also engaged the Get the Facts Out initiative, led by board member Lindsay Keazer.
This fall, we held our regular fall conference themed Equitable Math Pedagogy and Content, co-chaired by Jillian Cavanna and Leah Frazee. Still opting for a virtual format, we were able to again leverage it for a rich set of speakers including practicing teachers and district leaders and colleagues form other affiliates. Lateefah Id-Dean joined us from Georgia to discuss her work with preservice teachers to support them in learning about their students in ways that can then connect to mathematics. We also had a strong contingency from Purdue University- Michael Lolkus, Rose Mbewe, Emmanuel Adjei, and Jill Newton – sharing their work on developing courses to explore social justice in a local and global context.
We are currently developing our program for the upcoming year, and organizing elections to take place during our March Business Meeting. Questions and inquiries can be sent to amteconnecticut@gmail.com.
KAMTE (Kentucky)
In fall 2021, the Kentucky Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (KAMTE) held a Virtual Summit in October and Pre-Service Teachers Virtual Conference in November. Dr. Michael Steele was the invited speaker at each event. A fall book study on the text, Cases for Mathematics Teacher Educators: Facilitating Conversations about Inequities in Mathematics Classrooms, was led by Kanita DuCloux from Western Kentucky University.
In spring 2022, KAMTE has two events planned: a Pre-Service Teachers Virtual Conference on February 25 with featured speaker Jenny Bay-Williams and three “Virtual Lunch and Learn” events to be held in January, March, and April.
KAMTE is excited to announce the creation of the Kentucky Journal of Mathematics Teacher Education (KJMTE). The first edition of the scholarly, blind peer-reviewed journal for practitioners will be disseminated in fall 2022; call of submissions will be forthcoming in the spring.
MAMTE (Mississippi)
MAMTE held their annual symposium virtually on May 17, 2021. Tim Hendrix and Glenn Waddell helped MAMTE Past President Liza Bondurant share the Get the Facts Out presentation. Marla Davis, Debra Burson, and Heather Morrison also shared important statewide MDE and IHL updates. New officers, Joel Amidon (President Elect), Julie Riales (Treasurer), Bonnie Oppenheimer & Liza Bondurant (Members-at-Large) were announced and outgoing officers, Liza Bondurant (Past President), Alice Steimle (Treasurer), Clifton Wingard & Janie Bower (Members-at-Large) were thanked for their service. Dana Franz (current President) and Liza Bondurant (Member-at-Large), members of MTEP 2.0, hosted a virtual book study of “Catalyzing Change,” which several MAMTE members attended. We will hold a Business Meeting on April 9, 2023 at MCTM’s annual meeting.
AMTE-NC (North Carolina)
The North Carolina Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators [AMTE-NC] affiliate plans to host our fourth annual pre-service teacher poster session. This will be the second year that we will use a virtual format in coordination with the North Carolina Council of Teachers of Mathematics state conference. Preservice teachers submitted a proposal for their poster that included a mathematics task, an appropriate grade level or grade band, learning goals, relevant Standards for Mathematical Practice, and authentic or hypothetical student work. Doctoral students from around the state provided feedback on each proposal, which preservice teachers took into account to create their final posters. During the week of February 21-25, posters will be displayed via Padlet where members of the AMTE-NC community and preservice teachers can engage in dialogue about the tasks presented. Please check out the event, including the outstanding posters on the event page on the AMTE-NC website.
TAMTE (Tennessee)
The Tennessee Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (TAMTE) affiliate met jointly with the Tennessee Mathematics Teachers Association (TMTA) Annual Conference in Memphis, TN is October 2021. An almost-all-new leadership team was voted into place and TAMTE programming was approved for 2022. TAMTE provides an AMTE Travel Scholarship annually to support a graduate student member to attend (for the first time) the annual AMTE conference. Applications are being accepted and the awardee will be announced November 24. TAMTE members will meet January 29, 2022 in Cross Plains, TN in conjunction with the Middle Tennessee Mathematics Teachers conference for a business meeting. New initiatives moving forward include a focused recruitment effort to target mathematics educators across the State at all levels (K–12 district leaders/math coaches, community colleges, and universities (private and public)), and organizing an annual conference for Fall 2022. Efforts are also being made to develop a TAMTE logo/brand for use in marketing and on the website moving forward. Additional planning and efforts will be decided at the January meeting. We look forward to growing our organization and uniting our mathematics education community.
VA-AMTE (Virginia)
The Virginia Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators held their Research Symposium on October 2. As a young and growing organization, we enjoyed meeting each other again face to face on the beautiful James Madison University campus. We also provided a virtual connection to accommodate others who were unable to attend in person. We learned a great deal from the wide variety of research topics presented: Who are Elementary Math Teacherpreneurs who Share on www.teacherspayteachers.com?, Preservice Teachers’ Experiences with Virtual Micro-teaching in a Middle School Mathematics Methods Course, Concrete Versus Virtual Mathematics Manipulatives: It’s Not a Competition and sessions exploring the integration of reading comprehension strategies with mathematics problem solving strategies for elementary students.
We continue to remain focus on our objectives for this year. This spring, we turn our attention to the Virginia Mathematics Pathways Initiative (VMPI). This is a joint initiative between the Virginia Department of Education, State Council of Higher Education for Virginia, and the Virginia Community College System to modernize and update mathematics instruction to K-12 students in order to prepare them to be life ready and succeed in their post-secondary pursuits. As mathematics teacher educators, we seek to learn more about this initiative and how it may impact the way we prepare preservice teachers in our programs. We plan to host an event in the spring to facilitate the conversation addressing preservice teacher preparation.
