Fall 2026
This Fall 2026 issue of AMTE Connections highlights the many ways mathematics teacher educators continue to learn, adapt, and strengthen our professional community. Contributors invite us to think about cultivating productive mathematical dispositions, navigating the opportunities and challenges of artificial intelligence, using teaching simulations to support teacher learning, and building sustained networks for collaboration. Across the issue, updates from AMTE committees, programs, and publications offer additional opportunities to connect, engage, and grow together. As we begin a new academic year, I hope this issue provides ideas, resources, and connections that support and inspire your work.

This article explores how children’s literature can be intentionally selected to support the development of productive mathematical dispositions. Drawing on dispositions such as seeing mathematics as useful and worthwhile, persistence, mathematical self-efficacy, sense-making, and productive habits of mind, the authors present a framework for evaluating children’s mathematics trade books. A decision matrix illustrates how educators can examine texts for the ways they portray mathematics and mathematical learners, with examples demonstrating how books vary in their attention to these dispositions. The authors encourage teachers to consider not only the mathematical content of children’s books, but also the messages those books convey about what it means to do, learn, and value mathematics.
Denise Polojac-Chenoweth (Hillsborough County Public Schools)
This article examines how unstructured use of generative artificial intelligence can obscure preservice teachers’ mathematical and pedagogical reasoning, making it difficult for mathematics teacher educators to accurately assess readiness for classroom practice. Through a practitioner action research study in an elementary mathematics methods course, the author redesigned assessments to make candidates’ thinking more visible through in-class performance tasks, handwritten mathematical work, individual accountability, and oral lesson defenses. Findings suggest that while unrestricted AI use can mask gaps in pedagogical understanding, intentionally structured AI tasks can deepen candidates’ critical analysis and professional judgment. The article conculsed with recommendations for developing coherent program-wide AI expectations, designing assessments that preserve instructional visibility, and preparing future teachers to use AI responsibly without substituting it for independent reasoning.

This article highlights the 2025–2026 AMTE Simulations Community Circle speaker series, which showcased emerging research and innovative tools for engaging preservice and in-service teachers in teaching simulations. Key insights from the four featured presenters are summarized. We conclude by sharing reflections on the structured meeting format and encourage AMTE members to connect with our community circle.

The Southeastern Conference Mathematics Education Community (SEC+ MEC) is a sustained conference-adjacent collaboration among mathematics teacher educators across SEC institutions and other partners focused on recruitment, preparation, and retention of secondary mathematics teachers. Building on regular virtual meetings, the community has convened four fall summits [University of Kentucky (2022), University of Florida (2023), Louisiana State University (2024), and Auburn University (2025)] to consolidate learning and coordinate next-step actions. Press releases from the universities document the convening sequence and the multi-year structure of the network, as well as the annual meeting focused on increasing recruitment, reducing program attrition, and setting collaboration goals for each academic year.

Calling for Applications for Editorial Leadership of the Mathematics Teacher Educator!
The Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics are seeking applications for Editorial Leadership of the Mathematics Teacher Educator. The journal aims to build a professional knowledge base for mathematics teacher educators that develops and strengthens practitioner knowledge. Applications are due by Oct. 1, with the role of Editor-Designate starting in May 2027. Learn more about this exciting opportunity here.
Connections is a quarterly online publication of the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators. It offers a peer-reviewed opportunity for members to disseminate information to the mathematics teacher education community.
