Judith E. Jacobs Lecture
2022 Annual AMTE Conference
Sandra Crespo
Sandra Crespo is a professor of mathematics education and the associate chair of graduate education at Michigan State University. Her research agenda is focused on supporting mathematics educators to develop awareness and practices to address educational injustices. She uses the lenses of critical pedagogy and status generalization theory to challenge oppressive forms of mathematics education and to disrupt the circulation of deficit discourses and practices that normalize cultural myths about ‘smart’ students and ‘good’ teachers of mathematics. She has been especially interested in researching problem posing and complex instruction as practices that center educational equity and justice. She engages in collaborative research across institutions and national borders. She is currently working on several projects focused on developing resources to support teachers’ conversations about anti-racist mathematics teaching and to develop teaching moves that draw on students’ linguistic and cultural resources. She is one of the authors of the book Smarter Together: Collaboration and Equity in the Elementary Mathematics Classroom and co-editor of the AMTE book Cases for Mathematics Teacher Educators. She is drawn to leadership roles that have a mentoring and educative mission such as faculty mentor of the STaR program (2014-16); editor of the Mathematics Teacher Educator (MTE) journal (2014-18), and co-chair of the Research in Mathematics Education SIG of AERA (2018-20). She is currently serving as associate editor of the Journal for Research in Mathematics Education (JRME, 2019-24) and has been appointed to the US National Commission on Mathematics Instruction (USNC/MI) for a 3 year term (2021-2024).
