As an organization, AMTE remains firmly committed to our longstanding support of our entire mathematics education community. Through a myriad of professional opportunities, our group of brilliant, diverse educators engage in teaching, research, service and leadership efforts that span several academic disciplines in different educational settings. Such efforts enable our community to effectively engage, creatively lead in influential areas related to teacher education, and the ever changing landscape of mathematics education in conjunction with intersecting disciplines.

Service, Teaching and Research (STaR) Program - Summer 2026
In June 2026, I had the opportunity to take part and grow with this years’ amazing cohort of STaR scholars. Led by the AMTE’s STaR Program staff Dr. Anthony Fernandes, Dr. Amanda Jansen, Dr. Belinda Edwards, and Dr. Carlos LópezLeiva, as well as the guidance of VP of Professional Learning Dr. Jennifer A. Wolfe; the weeklong institute was full of inspiration, collaboration, joy, and networking. AMTE takes great pride in mentoring early career scholars while cultivating future leaders for the field of mathematics education.
The series of teaching interest groups (TIGs), manuscript review groups (MRGs), and research interest groups (RIGs), and timely fireside chats establish and extend collaborative opportunities to share and engage in critical work. We are very grateful to the tremendous contribution and partnership with CPM Educational Program who sponsor the STaR program and our summer institutes in Park City, UT. We look forward to reconvening this cohort of STaR scholars at the AMTE conference in Baltimore in February 2027!
MathFest in Boston, MA - Summer 2026
In early August, a few AMTE board members had an opportunity to meet and contribute to sessions at the Mathematical Association of America Mathfest where mathematicians, educators, policy makers and students gathered to discuss and share relevant topics. By taking part in this gathering, AMTE leadership was able to connect with one of the largest annual gatherings in the mathematical sciences to learn about advances in teaching and research. In addition, several key sponsors and future partners expressed interest in collaborating on joint efforts including representatives from the Conference Board of Mathematical Sciences (CBMS). In particular, multiple conversations involved upcoming collaborations with the Consortium for Mathematics and Its Applications (COMAP) and American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges (AMATYC).
Furthermore, during MathFest 2026, we had the chance to get additional updates during connected sessions by the author teams of The Mathematical Education of Teachers III: Preparing Teachers for the Next Decade. In particular, the brief summaries provided by Dr. Marilyn Strutchens, Dr. Yvonne Lai, Dr. Gary Martin, and Dr. George J. Roy were tremendously insightful in guiding next steps. It is anticipated that by November or December 2026, the MET III document will be available including recommendations for integrating Artificial Intelligence and other technology into mathematics courses for teachers as well as a greater emphasis on modeling across the courses required for teachers.
The 2027 Conference team has been leading and envisioning in preparation for a fantastic conference. Huge thanks to the ongoing work of all the committees and in particular AMTE AVP Program Dr. Alesia Moldavan, AVP for Conference, Dr. Ashley Schmidt, and the Chair of Local Arrangements, Dr. Skip Fennell.
