The Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (AMTE) Twenty-Second Annual Conference
Houston, TX, February 8-10, 2018
The Twenty-Second Annual Conference will be held at The Westin Galleria Hotel in Houston, TX. The conference guestroom rate is $169/night for a room with occupancy of 1 to 4 people. Note that all conference activities are at The Westin Galleria Hotel.
Information about transportation from George Bush Intercontinental/Houston Airport (airport code IAH) and Houston Hobby Airport (airport code HOU) will be on the AMTE website in January.
Program information will be updated over the next few weeks and a final program will be posted in January.

Conference Highlights
Thursday – February 8th
New this year, breakfast is provided beginning at 6:45 a.m. Lunch and light snacks during the afternoon break will be provided and are included in the registration fee. Dinner is on your own.
Special events for all conference attendees
The opening session will begin at 8:00 a.m. and will feature presentations by Randy Philipp, San Diego State University; Laurie Rubel, Brooklyn College, The City University of New York; and Stephen Russell, University of Texas at Austin. The title of this presentation is “Expanding Equity in Mathematics Education to Include LGBTQ+People."
Beginning at 1:00 p.m., right after lunch, a general session, "Meeting the Standards for Preparing Teachers of Mathematics: What Will It Take," will be held." The session will feature a panel presentation moderated by Kathryn Chval, University of Missouri. Panel members are Julia Aguirre, University of Washington, Tacoma; Jim Lewis, University of Nebraska, Lincoln; Travis Olson, University of Nevada, Las Vegas; Nicole Rigelman, Portland State University; and Marilyn Strutchens, Auburn University.
All AMTE conference attendees are invited to a reception, 6:00 to 7:15 p.m. AMTE will welcome representatives of several organizations, all working in the Houston area, who will describe the services and support they provide to advance positive changes in attitudes, behaviors, and policies regarding equality and respectful treatment of LGBTQ+ individuals, families, and communities.
Session highlights
- Last year’s Early Career Award Winner, Jennifer Tobias, will present a session titled, “Fraction Learning Trajectories in Preservice Teacher Education Content Courses.”
- During the AMTE Publications Session titled “Transforming an Idea into an AMTE Publication: Getting Feedback,” potential authors can receive guidance on a manuscript for one of AMTE’s publications.

At 6:45 a.m., the Advocacy and Emerging Issues Breakfast will feature Della Cronin, Principal, Washington Partners, LLC and Karen King, Program Director, Division of Research on Learning in Formal and Informal Settings, Education and Human Resources Directorate, National Science Foundation. The annual AMTE Advocacy and Emerging Issues Breakfast highlights up-to-date initiatives and events related to policy in mathematics teacher education. Our invited speakers will participate in an open discussion about how they approach advocacy in various contexts and will highlight important issues AMTE members need to consider related to research and practice in our field. After brief introductions, the panel will respond to questions prepared by the Emerging Issues Committee (EIC). We will end with an open forum inviting questions from the audience and further discussion from the panel.
Session highlights
- More than 30 posters will be shared at the AMTE Poster Session from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m.
- Beginning at 5:00 p.m., the Judith Jacobs Lecture will be given by Margaret (Peg) Smith, Professor Emerita at the University of Pittsburgh. The title of her presentation is “A Mathematics Teacher Educator’s Journey: Responding to an Evolving Field."
- This year’s winner of the Award for Excellence in Teaching in Mathematics Teacher Education, Signe Kastberg, along with colleagues Alyson Lischka and Susan Hillman, will present a session titled “Factors that Impact MTE’s Written Feedback Practice: Improving Practice through Inquiry.”
Saturday – February 10th
Breakfast and lunch are included with the registration fees. Members of AMTE affiliates will meet during breakfast.
Conference sessions will begin on Saturday at 8:00 a.m. The AMTE Business Meeting will be held during lunch. The conference will conclude by 1:30 p.m.
