Description: Culturally relevant pedagogy has many implementation opportunities and challenges, including balancing selection of appropriate social topics and emphasis on mathematics content rigor. Participants will write a personal word problem involving a visit to a restaurant to buy and share pizza, and analyze their perceptions of culturally relevant pedagogy in the mathematics classroom. A model for analyzing culturally relevant responses will be discussed. Alternative culturally relevant activities and resources will be considered for different grade levels. Findings from a thematic content analysis study including feedback from pre- and in-service teachers will be discussed.

Description: We envision this session as bringing together perspectives from the Conference Board of Mathematical Sciences (CBMS) organizations, including the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), Consortium for Mathematics and Its Applications (COMAP), Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM), and Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (AMTE) to strengthen and bridge PK–20 modeling experiences. We will discuss examples and opportunities for MTEs to engage in modeling as learners, while considering how these experiences could be used in their own teaching and research. We invite MTEs to consider how they might increase modeling implementation and adapt resources within their courses and community engagement.

Description: In this session, we will share goals and samples of work from a new project in which we are gathering and sharing stories of adults’ lived experiences of mathematics. In their stories, participants share how they see themselves engaging in mathematics in their lives and how these experiences relate – or do not easily relate – to their memories of school mathematics. They reflect on the Standards for Mathematical Practice as well as what they hope for young people today. Some participants are from fields typically considered “STEM”; some are not. Many are members of historically marginalized groups. We encourage the use of these stories in lessons with teacher candidates and practicing educators in order to help them to reflect on the experiences that they provide (or will provide) in their own classes.

Description: This session invites participants to explore how AI can be positioned as a collaborative thought partner in mathematical problem solving and how this positioning influences learner engagement with the Standards for Mathematical Practice. Drawing on longitudinal, multi- method research with mathematics teachers, participants will explore empirical examples of learner-AI interactions during a mathematical modeling task and identify evidence of these practices. Building on this analysis, participants will engage in mathematical tasks using different AI tools commonly found in mathematics learning environments (e.g., Snorkl, Sizzle). The session concludes with discussion of the capabilities and limitations of AI tools and how existing effective mathematics teaching practices can inform intentional integration of AI in K–16 classrooms, teacher preparation, and professional learning settings.
